Joe Hight, The Oklahoman's managing editor for features, research and development, is in his second term as president of the Dart Center for Trauma and Journalism.
He co-authored the booklet "Tragedies & Journalists: A Guide for More Effective Coverage" and "Managing the Unexpected." He also wrote the online booklet "First Responders." He also co-founded the People and the Media Program at the University of Central Oklahoma, where he was named as a "distinguished former student."
He also is chairman of the Mid-America Press Institute and serves on the boards of several other journalism-related organizations. He has taught and lectured at several universities and news organizations in the United States and Australia, been a visiting faculty member at the Poynter Institute and has spoken at national conventions and workshops, including three National Writers' Workshops.
He also wrote several articles on writing, editing, interviewing, victims coverage and other subjects in the latest edition of "Reporting for the Media," a textbook that's used at many universities.
At The Oklahoman, he was victims team leader of the Oklahoma City bombing coverage that won two national SPJ awards, a Dart Award and many other awards.
