A DVD project coordinated by Frank Ochberg, M.D., and featuring Ochberg Fellow Mike Walter ('05) has won a FREDDIE Award by MediMedia. The award — this one in the category of psychiatry — will be presented Nov. 2 in Philadelphia.
Walter descibed the DVD, "Surviving Trauma and Tragedy: Lessons for Future Physicians and Health Professionals," as an educational tool for medical students that translates to journalism education.
Ochberg selected Walter to moderate a session at Michigan State University on psychological trauma with help from Keith Etheridge of the Michigan Victims Alliance.
Walter, morning anchor and reporter for WUSA-TV in Washington, D.C., oversaw the production of the project with a longtime colleague, Paul Schneider.
"I guess what you will find more interesting is how Frank has managed to make this all dovetail with fellows," Walter said. "Last year Frank invited me back to Hollywood to talk to the Fellows about this project. Brant and Sue Krauss, who were traumatized by the death of their teenage son, joined me. The interview I did with them was shown before we talked to the fellows."
"There were a lot of thoughtful questions asked of the panel. I think the fellows got a lot out of it, and I know the med students in Michigan got a great deal out of this session," Walter writes. "Frank is now talking about using this video at other med schools, and the value to journalists is there, too, as demonstrated in Hollywood."
