Journalism professors from multiple universities will speak on journalism and trauma topics during the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) annual conference at the Renaissance Grand Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri scheduled for Aug. 10 through 13.
A panel on "Anti-Immigrant Sentiments and Communication Issues," will feature Dart Academic Fellows Celeste Gonzales de Bustamante (Arizona State University) and Amy Schmitz Weiss (San Diego State University), along with Laura Castañeda (San Diego City College) and Richard Schaefer (University of New Mexico) -- all members of the new Border Journalism Network, funded by Dart Center West and Gannett Media Grants.

At the annual seminar of the Finland-Swedish Publishers Association in Hangö, Finland, a presentation on the reporting challenges posed by mass shootings and similar critical incidents.
Finnish researcher and national Dart contact person Klas Backholm, and journalists Alexander Uggla and Jenny Sanner Rosqvist will be reflecting on the recent attacks in Oslo and the island of Utoeya.
They will be discussing what makes for ethical crisis reporting, the hazards in using media releases that have been pre-prepared by perpetrators, and what journalists need to know about self-care when working on traumatic, crisis-related assignments.

At a week-long summer school for investigative reporting in Optaija, Croatia, a workshop on interviewing victims of trauma.
At a week-long summer school, lasting from August 21 to 27, the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) will bring together leading international and Balkan journalists and trainers for workshops and roundtable discussions on the issues facing journalists in the region.
Gavin Rees, director of Dart Centre Europe, will run a workshop on "Interviewing Victims of Trauma." The training will look at the special tools and sensitivities investigative journalists need when interviewing the vulnerable and powerless.
