Because of the interdisciplinary nature of journalism and trauma research, journals from a variety of scholarly fields are appropriate outlets for new work in this emerging area of study. This fact sheet serves as a preliminary directory of journals that publish work concerning journalism and trauma and is designed to give guidance to both producers and consumers of research and scholarship.
In general, researchers should consider the following when submitting work to journals:
- Does the publication emphasize quantitative research, qualitative research, or include both approaches?
- What audiences will be most interested in your work: physicians, clinicians, mental health advocates, media workers or media management, media scholars, social science scholars, policy makers?
- Is there either a domestic or an international focus to your work? Does the journal you’re considering tend to emphasize work done in the U.S. or dealing with American media?
- What is the journal’s average turn-around time from submission to acceptance to publication? Is there a timeliness element to your research?
- Will your manuscript fit the length and style requirements of the journal?
