    Lord, Cleanse Us: Effects of disease permeate society

    CHAMBOLI, Zambia Thousands of wood and metal markers stud the bare earth surrounding the resting place of Enock Chinsense.

    Shovels are at work a few feet from his fresh grave. In the distance, wailing rises near the children's plots. Trucks, buses and cars carrying the bereaved rumble along an unpaved road that bisects acres of makeshift tombstones.

    Three people pray quietly for Chinsense amid the din, the dust, the bustle of the Chamboli Cemetery.

    ‘I Cried Inside’: Reporting on AIDS in Zambia

    In August 2003, Dart Fellows Frank Green and Joseph Rodriguez traveled to Zambia to chronicle the AIDS crisis. The trip, funded by the Dart Center, resulted in a remarkable three-part series published in the Richmond Times-Dispatch on Aug. 31, Sept. 1 and Sept. 2. Below is an email interview with Rodriguez and Green about the experience.

    You Can't Give Up: Helping Thousands of Zambia's Orphans

    They're usually barefoot, their clothes don't fit and they need a good scrubbing. Some suffer from AIDS, tuberculosis, herpes, malaria, neglect and abuse. Many hunger for food, others for attention. To Elizabeth Chisembele, the AIDS orphans of Kitwe, Zambia, are worth all the effort and love she is capable of giving.

    I've always been a slightly nervous person. I laugh a lot and cry a lot, and I wear my heart on my sleeve. But, I have never had a problem. I got the occasional dizzy spell from being completely hyper, but nothing else; I just lived my life and it was fine.
