Teaching Trauma:
What Journalism Educators Need to Know

Intensive workshop for Chicago area journalism teachers

When: Friday, Nov. 7 and Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008

Where: Loyola University, Lakeshore Campus, Chicago (Map)

Application deadline: Sept. 24, 2008 (Apply online)

As a journalism instructor, you know that your students may have to cover some of the toughest stories imaginable. We’d like to help you prepare them. This November, the Dart Center for Journalism & Trauma and the University of Washington Center for Global Studies will convene a select group of Chicago area college and high school journalism teachers to learn more about teaching journalism and trauma and to discuss new directions in media education.

Friday, November 7
9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Topics will include:
  • Emotional trauma and good reporting
  • Covering global crises: Media literacy and editorial decision-making
  • Teaching tips and tools: Resources for trauma journalism
  • When tragedy affects student journalists

Discussion and dinner reception to follow.

The workshop is funded by the Dart Center for Journalism & Trauma at the Department of Communication and the Center for Global Studies at the Henry M. Jackson School for International Studies, University of Washington.
